The Causes And Effects Of Fast Food Essay writing Guide

How to start an essay on ‘The Causes And Effects Of Fast Food’

This is a cause-effect essay about fast food. It requires you to talk about how fast foods have become so popular and its effects on the consumers. Such an essay is best written in 4 paragraphs each paragraph with 3-7-7-3 sentences. This means that your piece should have 3 sentences for the introduction paragraph, 7 in the Causes paragraph, 7 in Effects paragraph and the last 3 sentences in conclusion paragraph.

All essays must begin with the attention-grabbing sentence to hook the reader into reading the entire paper. Give your reader a general idea of fast food and emphasize why the issue is relevant to this generation.

  • Begin your essay with the facts and statistics about fast food to grab the attention of your readers.

Example: ‘In the past people used to eat freshly prepared healthy home-cooking today it is different; people opt for quick and tasty fast food which is detrimental to the well-being of our families. WHO reports an increasing intake of fast food in America; 13 billion hamburgers are eaten by Americans yearly. In 2012 alone, over 30% of children 3-5 years were obese.

  • Open with a strong statement ‘fast food is the number one cause of obesity in America today.’
  • Open with a question ‘have you ever considered how many humbuggers the Americans consume yearly?’

Don’t forget to include a thesis statement a statement of purpose tells your reader about the topic of your essay.

Body paragraph

This is where you explain, describe and argue your points. Each body paragraph must carry a single idea, introduce your main concepts, support with evidence then give an analysis. Make sure a smooth transition between paragraphs exists. Body paragraph contains the causes and effects of fast foods explained in detail. Give plenty of causes and effects; each body paragraph must have an equal number of sentences (you can have 7 sentences for causes and 7 for effect). Don’t include unconvincing causes and effects just to reach the required word count. Make sure the causes you give a link to their effects especially when writing chained cause-effect essay. Give a clear demonstration that the cause is actually relevant to the results.

Begin with a logical outline like the one below:

  • Cause 1: Changing lifestyle
  • Cause 2: Cost of fast food over healthy food
  • Cause 3: Advertising the media advertise fast food making people curious

Example: ‘Lifestyle change is the main reason why people prefer fast food overcooking fresh, healthy food. Extended working hours, lengthy school days is the reason why people go for fast food which takes less time to prepare. The cost of healthy food is higher when compared to that of fast food that is why many households prefer fast food because of their meagre wages. Advertising in the modern society reach a large number of people; the fast food franchises use the internet, television, magazines to advertise different kinds of fast food. Due to curiosity, many people give it a try. ‘

  • Effect 1: Health issues like obesity, heart diseases, diabetes.
  • Effect 2: People have lost the family culture of eating together which has derailed commutation
  • Effect 3: Economy is affected because the fast food is cheaper than healthy food

Example: ‘Fast foods have serious effects on our health. Today many young people are obese making them less productive in the society. Some users of fast food have experienced cardiovascular diseases and diabetes. The tradition of mode eating together as a family is now broken by the fast food culture that has invaded the good culture we owned. Today children and adults lack the opportunity to interact because of fast food. Fast food has affected the growth of the country economy because many fast food companies are foreign meaning all profit leave the country.’

To show cause and effect in an essay using these transition signals:

  • For this reason
  • Hence,
  • Accordingly,
  • Consequently,
  • Therefore,
  • As a result,

NB! Remember that this is just a skeleton of the body paragraph, but I think you can build a strong body paragraph from it. Give more facts, examples, quotes, statistics to support the cause and effect you present to your reader.

  • Facts gathered from personal experience, from research, from observation.
  • Quotes direct quotes from experts to support your argument.
  • Examples ideas meaning and strong proof.
  • Statistics from credible sources (Cite all sources used to avoid plagiarism).

To meet a word count, you need to do research on the topic and make sure you use credible sources. Follow the instructions given in the prompt; most instructors state the required styles and sources to use in completing the essay.

The conclusion is as important as introduction paragaph. This is where you summarize your thesis statement. Write a conclusion after writing the body, don’t introduce any new idea there. A well-written conclusion shows writers understanding of the subject.

In the concluding paragraph:

  • Restate your thesis
  • Summarize the main points
  • Include a call to action; in a question form, prediction form, recommendation for or quotation.

Example: ‘In general, a lot of people consume fast food because of lifestyle change, influence from media and the low cost of fast food. However, I believe that the serious consequences the family and community face because of fast food is the main reason we must go back to home-cooking. Change begins with you and me. ‘

To conclude, begin with either:

  • In short,
  • To conclude,
  • In general
  • In brief
  • On the whole,
  • To sum up
  • In summary

These simple words give the essay a smooth transition they help you connect ideas. Thus, this aspects will help an individual make an informed decision in relation to the entire document.
