Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Hodgenville, Kentucky. He moved to Indiana in 1816 and to Illinois in 1830 where he had quite a few jobs. Though mostly self-taught, he practiced law in Springfield, Illinois and served in the state legislature. On March 4 1861 Abraham Lincoln became the sixteenth President of the United States. Less than two months after Lincoln became president, the Civil War broke out when Confederate soldiers fired on Fort Sumter in Charleston, SC. Seven states left the Union and elected Jefferson Davis as their president. Lincoln wasn’t always popular during this time because slaveholders didn’t want to be ordered by Lincoln to give up their slaves. Abraham Lincoln was well known to be strongly against the owning of slaves.
